The Case for Surgery
When Nonsurgical Isn't Enough
The Science
How FUE Works
No Linear Scar
Each graft is extracted individually — no strip of tissue removed, no stitches, no linear scar. The tiny extraction sites close on their own within days and are virtually invisible even with very short hair.
DHT-Resistant Donor Hair
Transplanted follicles are taken from the occipital zone, which is genetically resistant to DHT — the hormone responsible for pattern hair loss. That genetic resistance travels with the follicle. The transplanted hair grows for life.
Performed Under Local Anesthesia
You are awake the entire time and can watch something on a screen, listen to music, or simply rest. Most patients describe the experience as comfortable once the anesthetic takes effect.

What to Expect After
Days 1–3: Mild swelling is normal, particularly in the forehead area. Sleep with your head elevated. Avoid touching or washing the transplanted area.
Days 4–7: You may gently wash your hair. The donor area will be mostly healed. Tiny scabs will form around each graft site. Do not pick them.
Weeks 2–4: Transplanted hairs shed. This is called shock loss and it is completely expected. The follicles are entering a resting phase before new growth begins.
Months 3–4: New growth begins. Fine hairs emerge from transplanted sites. Texture may initially differ from surrounding hair — it will normalize over time.
Months 6–12: Progressive density improvement. By month 10–12, the final permanent result is fully visible.
Comparison
FUE vs. FUT: Why We Chose FUE
| FUE | FUT (Strip) | |
|---|---|---|
| Scarring | Tiny dots, virtually invisible | Linear scar on back of head |
| Recovery | 2–3 days | 10–14 days, stitches required |
| Short Hairstyles | Yes, no visible scarring | May show scar with short cuts |
| Discomfort | Minimal | Moderate (strip wound) |
| Graft Survival | 97%+ | 95–98% |
| Procedure Time | 3–8 hours | 4–8 hours |
Why It Matters
Choosing the Right Surgeon
The surgeon’s skill determines graft survival rate, extraction efficiency, hairline aesthetics, and the naturalness of the final result.
Dr. Giordano is directly involved in graft extraction, recipient site creation, and hairline design. He does not delegate the critical phases of the procedure to technicians. That hands-on approach is what sets Canvas & Glow apart from high-volume transplant mills that prioritize throughput over surgical precision.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The transplanted follicles are taken from a DHT-resistant zone and retain that genetic resistance in their new location. They will continue to grow for the rest of your life. However, existing non-transplanted hair may continue to thin without ongoing medical management.
This depends on the size of the area being treated and the density you want to achieve. A receding hairline might require 1,200 to 1,800 grafts. A larger area including the crown could require 2,500 to 3,500+. Dr. Giordano will give you an exact estimate during your consultation.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. You’ll feel the initial injections (similar to dental numbing), after which the area is fully numb. Most patients describe the procedure itself as comfortable. Post-operative discomfort is mild and managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
Transplanted hair sheds at two to four weeks (normal). New growth begins around month three to four. Visible improvement is apparent by month six. Full results at 10 to 12 months.
Yes. Female pattern hair loss is the second most common indication for FUE. Candidacy depends on donor density and the pattern of loss. Your consultation will determine whether surgical or nonsurgical treatment is the better approach.
Yes, and we strongly recommend it. Pre-transplant PRP optimizes scalp health. Post-transplant PRP accelerates healing and graft survival. Keravive and oral medication help maintain your non-transplanted hair long-term.
The best way to find out is to schedule a free consultation. Dr. Giordano will evaluate your donor area, your degree of loss, your health history, and your goals, then recommend whether FUE, nonsurgical treatment, or a combination is the right plan.
